With reference to Beating the Bounds in 1902.
You list as participants Henry Childs who was my 2 x gt grandfather and Frederick Childs who was his older brother. They were 2 of the many sons of John and Sarah Childs of Bush Farm, Little Berkhamstead . Also listed is an A Wackett who was probably Arthur Wackett and owner of Bucks farm. Arthur was married to Clara who was the youngest sister of Frederick and Henry.
You state in your article:-
Henry Childs lived at Clay Pits Farm with his wife Sarah - this is correct. His sons were Herbert (my gt grandfather who served with the Royal Garrison Artillery and survived the war) and his other 2 sons were Alfred and Henry. However, the Alfred John beating the bounds came from Essex, not Herts or Middlesex so was not related.
Alfred John Childs lived with his wife Rosa - her proper names were Rose Mary - and they lived at New Pond Farm, Bayford and were the parents of Christopher Childs according to his war record. As you say, Christopher, joined the 10th Bn. Durham Light Infantry and was killed age 18 on the 6th January 1917. However, according to the 1901 census records, they lived at Pond Cottages, adjacent to New Pond Farm. Alfred John was therefore the employee of Frederick Childs. Finally I can verify that Frederick Childs lived nearby at New Pond Farm with his wife Julia, they had a son called Frederick. However, I've had a quick look at the war records and so far cannot verify details of Frederick Childs, who was with 3rd Tank Supply Coy. and died aged 27, on the 21st August 1918. Would you be kind enough to advise me of the source of this information about Frederick so that I can check again?
Finally, you may be interested in the attached photo and newspaper clipping about the Childs family.
My great uncle William Uglow who came from Cheshunt is commemorated on the Menin Gate, it was very moving to be able to read his name for myself when I visited Ypres.
